Supporting student health: vaccine guidelines for schools

There are many things about being a kid that are unforgettable—they can run, jump, learn to read, or play with friends. Getting a vaccine-preventable disease shouldn’t be one of those unforgettable things.

Immunizing our children is a great way to keep them happy and healthy. Proof of immunization is a requirement for attendance at any school (kindergarten–12th grade), Head Start, or childcare facility in Utah. An exemption may be granted for medical, religious, or personal reasons.

It is important as healthcare professionals to promote immunization as an effective tool to prevent many diseases. Even though progress has been made to eliminate many vaccine-preventable diseases, they still exist.

We must be vigilant in our efforts to make sure that as many children are protected as possible.

Understanding the Utah Immunization Rule for Students

These educational modules, “Understanding the Utah Immunization Rule for Students,” are designed to make the Utah Immunization Rule for Students (R396-100)* easier to understand for school personnel who administer the Rule. The modules are also intended to help school and early childhood program personnel who are responsible for submitting school and childcare facility reports understand how to apply the Rule to reporting procedures. The information is designed to be used in conjunction with the Utah Immunization Guidebook and the Utah School Immunization Record (USIR).

You should allow at least 15-20 minutes to complete each module. The actual time you spend will depend on how much of the supplementary material or resources you review. Pay special attention to statements denoted by the blue information icon. These statements provide additional important information.

*The Utah Immunization Rule for Students will be referred to as the “Rule.”

Immunizations are an important part of our children’s healthcare. The Utah Immunization Rule for Students, Rule 396-100, requires that children who attend school or childcare facilities be vaccinated against certain vaccine-preventable diseases. State law says a student may not attend a public, private, or parochial kindergarten, elementary, or secondary school through grade 12, or early childhood programs, including nursery or preschools, licensed daycare centers, childcare facilities, family home care facilities, and Head Start Programs unless they have a personal, medical, or religious exemption.

Download the Utah immunization guidebook for schools, early childhood programs, and healthcare providers to learn more about the Utah Immunization Rule for Students.

State law also requires that schools and early childhood programs collect immunization information and report immunization data annually. Data is collected to determine which schools and childcare facilities are in compliance with state law and to determine how many children are adequately immunized.
